Okrug Gornji is a part of Distric Okrug in a County of Split -Dalmatia. Okrug Gornji has very good connection with many touristy destinations in Croatia. There is an Airport Split nearby, highway that connects with whole Europe and ferryboat port in Split which connects with most Dalmatian islands and Mediterranean. Okrug Gornji has around 2800 inhabitants, and Okrug Donji also belongs to this county. Locals often call it OKRUK instead OKRUG. Okrug Gornji connects with the land by two bridges: bridge Čiovo-Trogir and bridge Trogir - land. On island Čiovo, except Okrug Gornji, there are also Okrug Donji, Arbanija, Žedno and Slatine
County Okrug is situated one the west part of the island Čiovo, and it consists of two traditional Dalmatian locality; Okrug Gornji and Okrug Donji. With its geographic position it is in the centre of Dalmatian micro region. It has mild Mediterranean climate, rich subtropical and Mediterranean vegetation, archipelago of small islands with countless hidden bays and beaches. Okrug, with its 2670 sunny hours per year, is one of the most attractive touristy destinations in Croatia.
Okrug Gornji is situated near by the cities which have a numerous historical monuments and are under the UNESCO protection (Trogir, Split and Šibenik). Beside this, there are national parks, which are proclaimed the most beautiful and most attractive in Europe. National park Krka with its famous Skradinski Buk and Roški waterfall, and national park Kornati which is known by its numerous numbers of islands that is suitable for so called Robinson tourism. Apart from national parks thereabouts is a river Cetina where rafting is very popular.
Okrug Gornji and its region offer different activates such as diving, snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, sailing, tennis, football (soccer), basketball, cycling. On island Čiovo there are many attractive bays with pebble beaches that are suitable for family tourism. During summer time, on the island Čiovo, there are many festivities organised by the locals for the tourists. Local population pursue agriculture (olive cultivation, grape vine, almond and fig cultivation as well as citrus fruits) fishing, and tourism which is also a backbone economic service of island Čiovo.
In county Okrug there are many restaurants, taverns and other gastronomy facilities that offer a rich supply of traditional Dalmatian speciality. Tourists can enjoy in beautiful sun and clear sea as well as a variety of recreational facilities. Diving school provides possibilities in enjoying the beauties of Adriatic Sea; Fitness centre with tennis court offers a great stress relief from modern life. There are organised daily trips, on small boats, to near by bays and beaches; In addition there is also a possibility of renting scooters as well as parachuting on a local beach.
City Trogir (distance 5km) -which is under UNESCO protection- provides enjoyment in 2 800 years old part of the city as well as good night life. From island Čiovo there are many possibilities for day trips to places like Waterfalls Krka (60 km), town Split (80 km) or Međugorje (100 km). Airport Split is only 8 km from the island. An average temperature is 16, 3°C and 281 day in the year an average temperature is above 10°C which gives a good opportunity for a pleasant stay during all year.
In Okrug Gornji there are three churches of which two are of historical maening (Church St. Charles Borromeo and Church St. Theodore) and one that has been built recently (Church Feast of the Holly Cross). We also reccomend a visit to Francisterian monestry, Dominican monestery, Church St. Mavr and other surraunding localities such as Okrug Donji, Slatine, little island Fumia on the west side of Čiovo, and cities Trogir and Split.
